Braves Blank Lenoir-Rhyne On The Road, 2-0

HICKORY, N.C. – UNCP got second half scores from Alex McManus and Lefke Boysen to support a career-best 10-save shutout by goalkeeper Whitney Beverly as the Braves completed the road portion of their 2007 schedule with a 2-0 blanking of Lenoir-Rhyne Wednesday afternoon at Bears Field.

Boysen improved on her team points lead with a goal and an assist for UNCP (9-5-1), with McManus punching in the seventh goal of her rookie campaign. Jamie Clarke also tallied her 16th career assist in the win as well. Lenoir-Rhyne (6-7-2) got seven shots from Michelle Garcia and four saves from goalkeeper Nicole Ley in the loss. The clean sheet was Beverly's league-leading sixth shutout of the season.

The outcome gave the Black and Gold its second consecutive victory over the Bears and pushed its first lead, 4-3-0, in the 7-game old series as well. The win also pushed UNCP's road record out to 6-4-0 – its first winning road clip since the club churned out a 6-3-2 mark away from Pembroke in 2004.

Beverly collected four of her career-best 10 saves in a mostly quiet first half that saw the game enter the intermission in a scoreless deadlock, despite a 9-1 shot disparity by the hosts. The Braves used McManus' 51st minute goal – her third game-winning goal of the season – to get off the mark, but were forced to dodge a handful of scoring opportunities by the Bears off corner kicks the remainder of the way out.

Boysen used a Clarke assist in the 71st minute to add an insurance goal for the visitors, but defender Nisa Akins provided the nail in the coffin when she cleared a shot off the line on a corner kick down the stretch.

UNCP will be back in action on Saturday when the Braves begin a season-ending three-game homestand by welcoming Peach Belt Conferene foe Georgia Southwestern (0-14, 0-5 PBC) to Varsity Grounds for a 5 p.m. match-up. The game will mark the front half of a college soccer doubleheader in Pembroke with the UNCP men's soccer team set to take on GSW immediately following the women's action. Admission to all 2007 UNCP soccer home games is free.
