PEMBROKE – Three different Braves got on
the scoreboard while UNCP recorded 39 shots in a 3-0 defeat of
Georgia Southwestern in Peach Belt Conference women's soccer
action on Saturday afternoon at Varsity Grounds.
UNCP (10-5-1, 2-4-1 PBC) controlled the ball for most of the
match with Pembroke taking 39 shots including 18 shots-on-goal to
just three shots (two on-goal) for GSW (1-15-0, 0-6-0 PBC).
Goalkeepers Whitney Beverly and Kristen Parker combined for the
shutout for the Braves with each playing a half.
“It's always important to play well at this time of
the year,” said UNCP head coach Lars
Andersson. “I'd like to see us be more efficient in
front of the goal, but it's a conference win and we'll
take it.”
Jamie Clarke broke the scoreless tie for the between the two
schools in the 12th minute of the game by launching a rope from
outside the 18 for her fourth score of the season. GSW would hold
the Braves to just the one goal off of 17 shots in the first half.
UNCP would come out firing in the second half accumulating 22
shots and two more goals in the second stanza. Alex McManus added
her eighth goal of the season in the 55th minute of the match and
Lefke Boysen closed out the scoring in the game with a goal in the
88th minute.
Faye Corbett
picked up the assists on the goal by McManus and Meredith Pierson
earned the assist on Boysen's.
The Hurricanes' Christy Drabek tallied 15 saves in goal
for GSW while Beverly and Parker earned a save apiece for the
Braves.
