PEMBROKE – Lefke Boysen tallied her third
multi-goal outing of the season to help support goalkeeper Kristen
Parker's first career clean sheet as UNCP stretched its
winning streak out to five games with a 3-0 blanking of USC Aiken
Saturday afternoon at Varsity Grounds.
Boysen scored for the fifth-straight game and her first and
second half scores marked the 13th and 14th goals of the campaign
for the Bremen, Germany, native. UNCP (12-5-1, 3-4-1 PBC) also got
a 28th minute goal from Sarah Day, and assists from both Alex
McManus and Meredith Pierson. Jamie Clarke turned in her school
record and PBC-leading 10th assist of the season as well.
USC Aiken (5-12-1, 1-6-1) fell to 0-5-1 all-time in the series
with the Black and Gold, despite a 10-save performance by netminder
Nicole Westphal. Four different players recorded shots for the Lady
Pacers as well.
The outcome also brought UNCP's final home mark to 6-1-1
in 2007.
“This was a great way to send out four seniors that have
meant so much to this program,” said UNCP head coach Lars
Andersson. “Kristen Parker got the shutout, Lefke Boysen
had two goals, Jamie Clarke had an assist and Petra Hagstrom logged
a lot of quality time at defender. This makes five wins in a row
for us and it is good to be on a roll heading into the PBC
Tournament.”
UNCP recorded the first 10 shots of the contest and did not
allow a USC Aiken opportunity until there was less than seven
minutes remaining in the opening period. Boysen got the Lady Braves
off the mark by redirecting a McManus pass from point blank range
in the 6th minute and Day cushioned the advantage out to a pair in
the 28th minute off Clarke's assist to give the hosts a 2-0
lead at the break.
The second stanza offered much of the same results for both
sides as the Black and Gold built a 14-3 shot advantage in the
latter period, but added just one insurance goal. Pierson found a
wide open Boysen in the penalty area and the senior finished the
scoring chance to cap the game scoring at the 76:32 mark.
Sixth-seeded UNCP will be back in action on Tuesday afternoon
when the squad travels to Greenwood, S.C., to take on red hot and
third-seeded Lander (12-4-0) in the opening round of the Peach Belt
Conference Tournament. Kickoff has been set for 4:30 p.m. The
Bearcats came out on the better end of a 1-0 game in Pembroke on
October 6.
