WILSON, N.C. – Freshmen Anna Wommack and
Meredith Pierson netted their first goals of the season to help
support goalkeeper Whitney Beverly's fifth shutout of the
campaign and help UNCP keep their perfect non-conference record
intact with a 3-0 blanking of Barton Wednesday evening at Nixon
Field.
The win helped snap a three-game road losing skid for the Lady
Braves (7-3-1) who improved their record outside of the league to
7-0-0 with the outcome. The result also snapped a two-game series
winning streak for the Bulldogs (3-4-4) as well.
UNCP used a fifth minute shot on goal by Jamie Clarke and a
seventh minute scoring attempt by Lefke Boysen to put Barton on its
heels almost from the get-go, before finally getting off the mark
when Wommack headed in a cross from Boysen at the 23:15 mark.
Twelve minutes later, Sheena Mature
would tack on her first collegiate point when she assisted a Jamie
Clarke score that gave the visitors a 2-0 advantage heading into
the break.
The Braves would open the second half with just as much energy,
collecting 10 of the period's first 11 shots, but came away
empty handed. Pierson would cap the game scoring in the 86th minute
with her first collegiate goal, following a Nisa Akins throw-in and
an ensuing cross by Sarah Day with a redirection that easily found
its way past Barton netminder Heidi Taylor.
The Lady Braves will be back in action on Saturday when the
squad suits up to host PBC frontrunner Lander (7-2-0, 4-0-0) in a
4:30 p.m. contest at Varsity Grounds. The game will mark the front
half of a soccer doubleheader with the UNCP men set to take on the
15th-ranked Bearcats at 7 p.m. Admission to all 2007 UNCP soccer
home games is free.
