PEMBROKE – Lander's Jannica
Finnberg bent in a 20th minute corner kick to give the visiting
Bearcats a 1-0 victory over UNCP on Saturday afternoon at Varsity
Grounds in Peach Belt Conference women's soccer action.
UNCP (7-4-1, 0-4-1 PBC) amassed 18 shots, doubling the total of
Lander who snapped a five-game series winless streak with the
triumph. Lander goalkeeper Rachael Hine recorded nine saves in the
game as the junior from Stockton-on-Tees, England, recorded her
fourth shutout of the season.
Lander (8-2-0, 5-0-0 PBC) took advantage of a sluggish start by
the Braves, scoring the early goal and then keeping Pembroke off
the board for the next 70 minutes, which included a UNCP penalty
kick.
“It was a tale of two halves, we didn't come out
ready to play in the first half but I thought we dominated time of
possession in the second,” said UNCP head coach Lars
Andersson. “We had a lot of good opportunities that we
just didn't capitalize on and their goalkeeper made some
great saves.”
Lefke Boysen finished the match with five total shots and three
shots on goal with Ashley McManus also tallying three shots on goal
for the Braves. Goalkeeper Whitney Beverly recorded just one save
but the Bearcats only had two shots on goal.
The Braves will try to stay perfect in non-conference action on
Wednesday afternoon when UNCP travels to play Catawba in Salisbury
at 5 p.m.
