Box Score TIGERVILLE, S.C. – Quarterback Eric
Moeller completed 23-of-30 passes for 303 yards and three
touchdowns, and running back Rashad Cummings ran for 138 yards and
a second half score, to help North Greenville end
visiting UNCP's inaugural season on a sour note with a 40-6
win over the Braves Saturday afternoon at Younts Stadium.
Darrin Watkins caught five passes for 69 yards and a second
quarter touchdown to provide the offensive highlight for UNCP
(4-7), who also got 36 rushing yards on 15 carries from Brandon
McLaurin. Quarterback Ryan Horton completed 13-of-24 passes for
159 yards and two interceptions for the Black and Gold.
The Crusaders (5-6), who entered the weekend with the
nation's seventh-ranked offense, rolled up 527 yards of total
offense, including 230 by intermission, to make a 24-6 halftime
lead stand up in the finale for both sides. Brandon Dobbins hauled
in nine passes for 123 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the hosts
as well.
Laurinburg native Adam Deese
turned in a team-best 7-1/2 tackles for the Braves, with Ben
Kurti and Adrian
Williams each tallying a sack. Dewayne James turned a pair of
tackles for a loss of nine yards. Punter Justin Hinson
shone brightly for the Braves with his best game all season,
kicking the ball five times for 226 yards (45.2 avg.), including a
54-yard first quarter boot.
After utilizing a pair of sacks that backed the Braves up inside
their own 10-yard line, North Greenville drove to the UNCP 3-yard
line on its opening possession, only to find the UNCP defense would
not be so giving. Cumming rushed twice for a lone yard on the first
two plays inside the 5-yard line and a Moeller pass on third down
fell incomplete, before the hosts settled for a 18-yard field goal
from Adrian Escalona.
North Greenville would punch the ball in the endzone, however,
on three of its next four possessions to finish off a high-scoring
first half and take a 24-6 lead into the lockerrroom.
Horton's 7-yard touchdown strike to Watkins with 14:04
remaining in the opening stanza would prove to be UNCP's only
points on the day.
The Braves drove to the Crusader 7-yard line with two seconds to
play in the second period, but Horton's pass on 1st-and-goal
was picked off by Tyrell Davis with no time remaining.
Matt Moore's 81-yard scoring jaunt on the first play from
scrimmage in the second half would continue North
Greenville's scoring melee and, two possessions later, the
Crusaders would close out their offensive show on a 52-yard
pass-and-catch from Moeller to Dobbins that increased the
hosts' lead out to 38-6. A safety with 6:25 remaining in the
contest would complete the scoring column for both teams.
