WINGATE, N.C. – Lefke Boysen scored a
pair of second half goals behind an impenetrable UNCP defense and
the Lady Braves continued a torrid run to begin the 2007 campaign
by stretching their winning skein to five with a 2-0 shutout of
Wingate Wednesday evening at the Wingate Soccer Complex.
Boysen notched her team-leading third and fourth goals of the
campaign, while rookie Alex McManus tallied her first assist of the
campaign to provide the scoring for UNCP (5-0-0). Megan Smith
managed two shots on goal to provide all of the offensive
highlights for Wingate (2-3-0). UNCP netminder Whitney Beverly
picked up two saves in turning in her fourth clean sheet of the
season.
With the result, the Lady Braves evened up its series with their
region rivals, 3-3-0, after the Bulldogs forged a lead in the
all-time match-ups with a 2-1 overtime victory last season in
Pembroke. The Black and Gold also managed to maintain its longest
winning streak since beginning the 2005 campaign with six-straight
triumphs (Aug. 27-Sept. 17, 2005).
“It was a good outing for us tonight,” said UNCP
head coach Lars
Andersson. “We came out as flat as I've ever seen
us in the first 10 minutes of the game, but we committed to playing
solid defense as a team and were able to keep them off the board. I
couldn't be more proud of the girls.
“We moved the ball around very well and were able to put a
couple in the back of the net. I think tonight's performance
also showed what a quality player Lefke (Boysen) is. We just took
it to the next level in the second half against a very good and
well-organized Wingate team.”
UNCP took the first four shots of the contest and did not allow
Wingate a look at the goal until the 36:11 mark when Smith managed
a tough shot that Beverly easily scooped up. Despite a 7-1 shot
disparity heading into the break however, the game remained a
scoreless deadlock.
Boysen helped the visitors take control just 10 minutes into the
second stanza when the senior took a feed from McManus and punched
a shot past WU goalkeeper Kathryn Smith for the go-ahead goal. Just
more than 26 minutes later, Boysen would provide an unassisted
insurance score to ice the game.
UNCP, the last remaining unbeaten and untied team in the Peach
Belt Conference, will be back in action on Saturday when the squad
heads to Milledgeville, Ga., to open up its league slate against
Georgia College (3-1-0). Kick off has been slated for 7 p.m. at
Bobcat Field.
