PEMBROKE – UNCP scored three times in the
first nine minutes of the second half to break an otherwise close
game wide open as the Lady Braves kept their unblemished record
intact with a 4-1 rout of visiting Queens Wednesday afternoon in
women's soccer action at Varsity Grounds.
Freshman Sam Dunn
scored the game's first goal and added an assist on Sarah
Day's gamewinner early in the second stanza to highlight the
offensive output for the Lady Braves (3-0-0) who, with
Wednesday's 25-9 disparity, have now out-shot their opponents
76-16 on the season. Lefke Boysen scored for the second-straight
contest, Jamie Clarke added a pair of assists and Faye
Corbett punched in her first goal of the season to round out
the scoring for the Black and Gold.
Although having its scoreless streak snapped at more than 300
minutes, the Lady Braves stayed perfect after three games for the
fourth-straight season. Goalkeeper Whitney Beverly had her
scoreless minutes streak stopped at 274:04 with an 83rd minute
score by April Robertson of Queens (1-3-0).
The Lady Braves played 22 members of 24-woman roster. Backup
netminder Kristen Parker declined an earlier entrance into the
contest in hopes of seeing Beverly notch her third-straight
shutout, but saw more than seven minutes of action once the clean
sheet was spoiled.
“At halftime I told them that, for the third-straight
game, we statistically dominated an opponent in the first half but
only came away with a 1-0 lead,” said UNCP head coach Lars
Andersson. “That's the most dangerous lead you can
have. I guess they took it to heart because we just came out and
dominated the opening minutes of the second half. It was a total
team effort tonight.”
Holding a 16-4 shot advantage and a 1-0 lead at the break on a
Dunn goal in the 24th tick, UNCP would put the game away by the end
of the 54th minute on a trio of scores. Day notched her
team-leading third goal of the season off a Dunn assist at the
50:25 mark and Lefke Boysen and Faye Corbett
scored less than two minutes apart in the 53rd and 54th minutes,
respectively.
UNCP will open up a three-game road trip on Saturday when it
treks to Murfreesboro for an afternoon tilt with Chowan (2-1-1).
Following their date with the Hawks, the Lady Braves will travel to
Wingate (Sept. 12) and Georgia College (Sept. 15) before returning
home on September 19 for a Wednesday afternoon match-up with
Armstrong Atlantic.
