MURFREESBORO – Visiting UNCP notched a
pair of late-second half goals behind goalkeeper Whitney
Beverly's third shutout of the season as the Lady Braves kept
their unbeaten string alive with a 2-0 blanking of Chowan Saturday
afternoon in Murfreesboro.
Alex McManus and Jamie Clarke each scored their first goals of
the season for the Lady Braves (4-0-0) who held the homestanding
Hawks (2-2-1) to just five shots, including two in the first
period. Beverly, who had her string of 274 consecutive scoreless
minutes snapped against Queens, tallied three saves in registering
the clean sheet.
With the result, UNCP extended their series winning streak out
to a trio of contests and improved to 2-1-0 all-time against the
Hawks. The current four-game winning streak for the Lady Braves is
the longest since the club reeled off six consecutive triumphs to
begin the 2005 campaign (Aug. 27-Sept. 17, 2005).
With the 23-5 disparity in Saturday's match, the Black and
Gold has now outshot its opponents 99-21 this season, while also
outscoring its foes 11-1.
“Obviously, I am very happy with the win,” said UNCP
head coach Lars
Andersson. “I am a little concerned that we now have more
than 100 shots this season, but only 11 goals to show for it. I am
not so much concerned with our goal scoring opportunities as I am
with the way we convert. But, this was a good day for us. We came
out undefeated so I am pleased with the result.”
Although out-gunning the Hawks in the first half, the Black and
Gold was engrossed in a 0-0 deadlock at the break, but continued
the pressure in the second half in putting the first point on the
board. McManus chipped in the eventual game-winner at the 70:00
mark and Clarke followed with an insurance score in the 75th
minute.
UNCP will be back in action on Wednesday when the Black and Gold
continues a three-game road trip at Wingate (2-2-0). Kickoff has
been slated for 7 p.m. at the Wingate Soccer Complex.
