GREENWOOD, S.C. – Newcomer Andrew Brown
scored the lone goal for UNCP in the 65th minute, but a pair of
first half goals by host Lander was enough to hold off UNCP's
comeback attempt in securing a 2-1 victory on Saturday afternoon at
Lander Soccer Field.
Undefeated in Peach Belt Conference action, Lander (7-5-0, 5-0-0
PBC) won its sixth-straight game in the series between UNCP (3-8-2,
1-5-1 PBC). The Bearcats outshot the Braves in the first-half, 7-1,
with goals from Andy Ledewig and Fred Parker securing the lead at
halftime. UNCP answered back in the second half, outshooting Lander
7-4. The only assist UNCP recorded was from Braxton Perkins to
allow Brown to score in search for a win.
"This is the most complete game we have played this year
because we played the game from start to finish," said UNCP
head coach Phil Hindson. "We had a few chances late in the
game to score but, unfortunately, we didn't. But, there were
positive aspects about the game which we will use to move forward
and improve on."
Freshman goalkeeper Ryan Hanson registered five saves while
Matthew Atkinson of Lander grabbed four saves. Three yellow cards
were given to UNCP all in the second-half, but Lander took 11 of
the 13 fouls awarded.
Matt Gallagher, Brett Luccia and Brown each took two shots for
UNCP, while Aaron Brittain had three for Lander with Fred Parker
and Matthew Bell shooting two each.
UNCP will be back in action again on Wednesday when it takes on
non-conference opponent Mount Olive (3-8-1). Kickoff is set for 7
p.m.
