Box Score GREENWOOD, S.C. – Visiting UNCP fought
off 18 shots by host Lander, 10 of which were on goal, to conclude
the 110 minutes of scoreless action in a Peach Belt Conference
matchup on Saturday afternoon at Lander Soccer Field in Greenwood,
S.C.
The result stretched UNCP's (11-1-2, 5-1-1 PBC) unbeaten
streak out to ten games, giving them nine shutouts on the season.
Senior Faye Corbett led the Lady Braves with three shots while
Fanny Forsman and Anna Svensson each contributed two. Christina
Barbour took six shots with two on goal while Jamie Shaw, Kendall
Couch, and Jessica Skowron contributed two shots on goal each for
Lander (8-5-1, 3-4-1 PBC).
"First off, we are organized defensively which gave
us an advantage with the ten shots on goal and not allowing Lander
to score, but unfortunately we didn't have the offense this
game," said UNCP head coach Lars Andersson. "We
didn't lose the game but it wasn't the outcome we
wanted entering into game and the players are a little disappointed
we didn't win, but we will take that emotion and work with it
to get us focused for our next four games."
Freshman goalkeeper Britney Bennett had a season-high 10 saves
for the Black and Gold, breaking her previous record of seven saves
against Clayton State. Katherine Baltz of Lander grabbed three
saves – one in each half of action and then one in double
overtime. This is the second tie of the season for UNCP and third
in the series between the Bearcats and the Lady Braves.
Five yellow cards occurred throughout the game but one red card
to Corbett occurred with four and a half minutes remaining in
action for UNCP midway through double overtime. UNCP had nine fouls
while Lander received 13 citations.
UNCP returns to Varsity Grounds on Wednesday for a PBC matchup
against Georgia College (7-4-0, 4-1-0 PBC). Kickoff has been slated
for 3 p.m. and admission to all 2010 UNCP soccer home games is
free.
