UNCP Blanks Visiting Georgia College 2-0

Box Score

PEMBROKE – Sophomore Anna Svensson scored two goals in the second half to lead UNCP to a 2-0 victory over Georgia College on Wednesday at Varsity Grounds. The scores gave Svensson the 15th and 15th goals of her career, moving the Sweden native to second on the program's all-time scoring list.

Despite a scoreless first-half, Svensson found her first opportunity to score with a scramble in the box when she connected on goal in the 57th minute and left the Bobcats (7-5-1, 4-2-1 PBC) unable to recover. Svensson, again, charged the goal after a shot by Sheena Mature bounced off goalkeeper Mary Rob Plunkett's legs to leave an open goal vulnerable to Svensson's precision in the 73rd tick.

The Lady Braves (12-1-2, 6-1-1 PBC) held strong on defense, holding the Bobcats to 14 shots including seven on goal. Bennett recorded seven saves and her sixth shutout of the season and has recorded 245 consecutive scoreless minutes in goal.

"We are outstanding defensively and very hard to score on which will make you competitive in any situation. But, offensively, Svennson's business is scoring goals and this was a huge win for us today," said UNCP head coach Lars Andersson. "Bennett had a great game in goal, but I must credit the four defensive backs when I talk about our defense because we are organized and communicate well with each other and have confidence with one another along with the rest of the team."

Registering assists were Rebecca Womack, Anna Zetterlund and Mature, while the Black and Gold only tallied nine shots with five on goal. Georgia College outshot UNCP in the second half, 10-6, with five of the 10 shots on goal. Plunkett had three saves for Georgia College. Kayla Emerson contributed three shots while Brittaney Borror, Taylor Yee and Karen Bonilla had two shots each.

UNCP closes out the road portion of its 2010 schedule on Saturday when it travels to Savannah, Ga., to face league rival and fourth-ranked Armstrong Atlantic (11-1-2, 8-1-0 PBC) in a 3:30 p.m. matchup at AT&T Field.
