Lady Braves Pull Off 3-1 Comeback Over Patriots

PEMBROKE  – The UNCP women's volleyball squad overcame an ugly first set and used double-digit kills from four players to defeat the Francis Marion Patriots in Peach Belt Conference volleyball action Wednesday night at the English E. Jones Center in Pembroke.

"We were down 19-23 in the third game, Caitlin (Haworth) comes in a brings us back from the dead. That was one of those things, where if we had lost that game we probably would have lost the next as well. She's a senior and did what a senior is supposed to do. Eman (Al-Aswadi) did a really nice job stepping in for Rachel. She's not real flashy, but she gets the job done," said UNCP head coach Jeff Billington. "If somebody can show me another sport that has more momentum changes than volleyball, I'd like to see that."

The Lady Braves (16-7, 5-4 PBC) lost the first set 22-25 before rebounding to win the next three sets via scores of 30-28, 26-24 and 25-9, and have now won eight of their last 11 matches. The Patriots (13-10, 3-7 PBC) lost their third-straight with the defeat and have been topped in five of their last eight matches.

Leading the way for UNCP was junior Rebecca Morgan, who recorded 13 kills and just one attack error on 40 attempts to pace the Lady Braves' effort. Morgan added 13 digs on defense to snag her eighth double-double of the year, a number that leads her team.

Heather Bolwerk recorded a career-high 50 assists in the victory while adding seven digs and two blocks on the defensive side of the net and chipping in three kills on a .333 attack percentage to go along with three service aces.

Junior Allie Schneider knocked in 13 kills of her own off the bench while adding six digs, and Rachel Young and Tiara Anderson each recorded 10 kills of their own in the victory.

Marissa Baker recorded 31 digs - two off her career high for the category – to give her three games this year with at least 30 digs.

UNCP hits the road this weekend to take part in the Pacer Volleyball Invitational in Aiken, S.C. with matchups against Coker and Palm Beach Atlantic on Friday at 1:00 p.m. an d 7:00 p.m., respectively.
