AIKEN, S.C.
– The UNCP women's volleyball squad ran
into a formidable opponent in Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday at
the USC Aiken Pacer Volleyball Invitational and, although each game
was competitive, fell to the Sailfish in three sets via scores
22-25, 18-25 and 22-25.
The Lady Braves (17-8, 5-4 PBC), normally one of the stronger
blocking teams in the region, were held to one of their lowest team
block numbers of the season by the Sailfish (17-5). UNCP was able
to stop just three PBA shots at the net, enabling the Sailfish to
hit nearly 100 points higher than the Lady Braves.
The Lady Braves' offense was led by a trio of juniors
in Rebecca Morgan, Tricia
Varno and Tiara Anderson, with
Morgan leading the way after notching 11 kills on 31 attempts.
Varno added seven kills, her fourth-highest output of the season,
and Anderson recorded six of her own.
Heather Bolwerk, yet another junior, was credited with 31
assists while adding seven digs on defense and
freshman Marissa Baker led the UNCP
defensive effort with 10 digs.
UNCP is back at it tomorrow with a matchup against Davis &
Elkins at 4:00 p.m. The Senators (9-14, 5-6 WVIAC) were part of
just one contest on Friday and lost to Francis Marion by a 3-0
final.
