Box Score SAVANNAH, Ga. – Fourth-ranked Armstrong
Atlantic offset Andrea Collen's first half goal with two
second half goals of its own in a 2-1 win over UNCP on Saturday
afternoon at AT&T Field in Savannah, Ga. The setback snapped a
10-game unbeaten streak for the Lady Braves – their longest
since the 2008 campaign.
Peach Belt Conference-leading Armstrong Atlantic (12-1-2, 9-1
PBC) won its third-straight game in its series with UNCP (12-2-2,
6-2-1 PBC). The Pirates outshot the Lady Braves in the first-half,
6-3, with UNCP's only shot coming by Collen for her first
goal of the season from a side volley off a corner kick by Anna
Svensson in the 32nd minute. Armstrong Atlantic answered back in
the second half by outshooting the Lady Braves 17-5 and adding two
goals to clinch at least a share of the PBC's regular season
title.
Morgan Mitchell scored her goal for the Pirates to tie the game
in the 54th minute with the assist from Kristina Pascutti. With
less than 10 minutes left in action, Armstrong Atlantic's
Emily Cattanach scored her goal against goalkeeper Britney Bennett
to take the lead and place the win in the hands of the Pirates.
"It was a fairly evenly matched game in the first-half
with what I would call a goal of the year, especially to strike a
volley off a corner kick is a one in a million opportunity,"
said UNCP head coach Lars Andersson. "This was a hard loss
and I take full credit for it because Armstrong Atlantic is a great
team and you can't give them any opportunity to score because
they will find a way. Unfortunately, we gave them many chances to
score in the second half and that is what secured their
win."
Bennett spent 90 minutes in goal with eight saves while Tracey
Mitchell logged five saves for the Pirates. Three yellow cards were
given to UNCP's Bennett, Rebecca Womack and Karmi Dagnachew.
UNCP registered 17 fouls to Armstrong Atlantic's 14.
Collen had four shots in the game with three on goal. Sheena
Mature had two shots on goal while Svensson had one for the Black
and Gold. Mitchell delivered four shots, Andye Dawson registered
three strikes and seven other Pirates recorded at least two
shots.
UNCP finishes its regular season at home this week with a
non-conference matchup against Catawba (6-6-3) on Wednesday at 5
p.m. and PBC rival North Georgia (13-3-0, 7-2-0) on Saturday at 1
p.m. at Varsity Grounds. Admission to all UNCP soccer home games is
free.
