Box Score PEMBROKE – UNCP got back on the winning track as they hammered home their 11th shutout of the season against Catawba on a 3-0 victory at Varsity Grounds on Wednesday evening. Junior Rebecca Womack added two goals while Andrea Collen added another for the 21st-ranked Lady Braves.
Womack got UNCP (13-2-2) started on its run 12 minutes into the game as she took a pass from Anna Svensson for a one-on-one opportunity with Catawba (6-7-3) netminder Lindsay Webster. Collen, with assists from Womack and Faye Corbett, forced her way into the box in the 32nd minute to take her turn on goal from 18 yards out. With only five minutes left to play until intermission, Fanny Forsman chipped a pass over Webster to allow Womack to score her second goal on an open net.
Faye Corbett matched a career best (2008, 2009) with her eighth assist of the campaign. Goalkeeper Britney Bennett claimed her seventh shutout of the season as she saved three shots in the match en route to the clean sheet.
"I'm happy for another win even though I didn't think we played to our best potential today," said UNCP head coach Lars Andersson. "We have some things we need to address in training before we face a challenging game against North Georgia for the third seed in the conference."
UNCP outshot Catawba 15-5 with seven shots on goal. Webster registered three saves, while Juliana Conte added a team-best two shots for the visitors. Womack led the Lady Braves in shots with six, including four on target.
UNCP will close out its 2010 regular season campaign on Saturday when it suits up to battle PBC rival North Georgia (13-3-0, 7-2-0 PBC) in a 1 p.m. Senior Day contest at Varsity Grounds. The game will be preceded by a special ceremony to honor UNCP women's soccer's Class of 2010 – Corbett, Karmi Dagnachew, Sam Dunn and Sheena Mature. Admission to all 2010 UNCP soccer home games is free.
