Box Score PEMBROKE – Junior Rebecca Womack led UNCP to a victorious ending against North Georgia as she broke a scoreless tie with the Golden Goal in the 106th minute on Saturday afternoon at Varsity Grounds. Womack's unassisted goal came as she dribbled her way around three Saints defenders, including the goalkeeper, to place the ball in the back of the empty net.
Saturday's shutout marked the 12th clean sheet of the season for UNCP (14-2-2, 7-2-1 PBC) and eighth for freshman goalkeeper Britney Bennett who tallied seven saves in a complete game between the pipes for the Lady Braves. North Georgia (13-4-0, 7-3-0 PBC) and UNCP knew this game was going to be the deciding factor on third and fourth place in the conference standings.
The Saints had the advantage entering into the game holding the third seed, however UNCP rose to the advantage and delivered a relentless performance. The Lady Braves outshot North Georgia 21 to 14, including a 4-1 advantage in the second overtime period.
"We came out and played well in the first half by moving the ball around the flanks, but we were unable to connect for a goal," said UNCP head coach Lars Andersson. "In the second half, I thought North Georgia was the better team until we started to play our game which is what delivered the win. These athletes had the desire to win and they showed it in their play making me extremely proud of them!"
North Georgia was held scoreless despite the effort of Caroline Wallace who took three shots, two of which were on goal. NGCSU goalkeeper Kirsten Ross also supplied seven saves. UNCP's Sheena Mature, Anna Svensson, Kayla Colon, and Womack each applied pressure on Ross as they pounded the Saints with three or more shots apiece.
UNCP will host sixth-seeded Montevallo (5-10-2, 3-5-1 PBC) in the first round of the PBC Tournament on Tuesday at Varsity Grounds. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
