SAVANNAH, Ga. – Morgan Mitchell's goal in the 78th-minute helped negate a strong defensive effort by visiting UNCP and helped 11th-ranked Armstrong Atlantic to a 1-0 win over the 18th-ranked Braves in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday at AT&T Field.

The Lady Braves (16-4-2) stayed competitive with the Pirates (14-3-2) with strong possession play in the first half, but the Pirates still managed to take a 7-1 shot advantage into the halftime break. in the first- The second half started much the same way but, as time played on, the Pirates placed more pressure on the UNCP defense and ultimately earning them the game-winning goal. Goalkeeper Britney Bennett recorded a career-high 12 saves in the losing effort, including nine in the final stanza.

The Pirates offensive force allowed the hosts to post an 11-1 shot advantage in the second-half en route to an 18-3 shot disparity. Sophomore Anna Svensson tallied a team-best two shots for the Lady Braves, with senior Faye Corbett added UNCP's only other shot.

"I'm very proud of the athletes for following through with the game plan which was focused more on the defensive side," said UNCP head coach Lars Andersson. "We let one slide through and, once that happens with only a few minutes left, it is hard to come back for a victory. Armstrong Atlantic has a great team with extreme depth that they use to their advantage and we wish them the best of luck throughout the rest of the NCAA Tournament."

Armstrong Atlantic netminder Tracey Mitchell was called upon to save just one shot in her 90 minutes of action. Morgan led the Pirates with a game-high five shots, including four on target. Kristina Pascutti and Danielle Fey took three shots apiece for the Pirates as well.

"This was an amazing season and we are going to try and build on the future and see if we can get beyond the second round in the tournament," Andersson said.

The Lady Braves wrapped up their season with the second-best record in school history, falling behind just the 2008 squad which concluded its campaign with a 19-3-1 clip.
