PEMBROKE – Senior JaToya Kemp scored her monumental point on a free throw at the 5:26 mark in the second half to become the 19th member of UNCP's 1,000-point club en route to leading the Lady Braves to an unforgettable victory over region rival Wingate, 70-62, on Wednesday evening at the English E. Jones Center.

The Lady Braves (2-0) and Bulldogs (1-1) saw eight tie scores and 10 lead changes through most of the contest, but the win was secured when Talena Faison stepped up to the 3-point line with 23 seconds left in the game and drained the perimeter shot to give the hosts the lead for good.  UNCP stretched its lead to a game-best eight, 70-62, on two free throws by Faison with seven seconds left.

Kemp led the Black and Gold with 22 points, seven rebounds one assist and one block and, after the game, said she was speechless about her achievement and owed it to the support of her teammates. Faison tallied 17 points and eight assists while DayDay Ray knocked in 12 points with seven rebounds for the Black and Gold as well. Illya Hunt had the game-high five assists.

 "I thought we battled hard the entire game especially against this team who is aggressive making us play a quick and competitive game of basketball," said UNCP head coach John Haskins. "I'm very proud of the team for wanting the win and playing through to the last second."

Despite a 24-13 disadvantage in the turnover column, the Lady Braves out-rebounded the Bulldogs 43-29. Kurie Washington tallied 22 points for Wingate along with three steals, two rebounds and one assist. Simone Rutledge and Sarah Wollett contributed 16 and 10 points respectively. Rutledge led in rebounding with six, while Wollett had a team-high four assists.

UNCP will enter the road portion of its 2010 schedule when it travels to Lander (3-0, 0-0 PBC) on Tuesday for the first Peach Belt Conference matchup of the season. Tip off is slated for 5:30 p.m. in Horne Arena.
