Box Score FAYETTEVILLE – Senior Briana Stanton recorded her first career double-double with a game-best 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead visiting UNCP to a 71-51 victory over Fayetteville State on Saturday afternoon at Felton J. Capel Arena.
Stanton's connected on better than 60 percent of her shots from the field for UNCP (3-1) and fueled her season-high offensive output with 11 points in the second half. Fellow senior JaToya Kemp punched in her 11th career double-double with 10 points and as many rebounds, with newcomer Domonique Washington registering 14 points and four assists.
Four players scored in double figures for winless Fayetteville State (0-4) including senior Tiffany Haywood who scored a team-best 14 points while grabbing a game-best 16 rebounds as well. The loss snapped a two-game series winning streak for the Lady Broncos who fell to 14-10 all-time against the Black and Gold.
"I thought it was really choppy at times," said UNCP women's basketball coach John Haskins. "We've got to come out and make better decisions. In the second half we got stops, we attacked the backboards and got to the free throw line and I think that was the difference in the game."
The Lady Braves pushed a four-point halftime edge out to 19 points, 45-26, just more than six minutes into the second stanza. Fayetteville State used an 11-2 run over the next four minutes to whittle its deficit down to just 10 points, 47-37, but the Black and Gold used consistent free throw shooting the rest of the way out and led by as much as 20 points, 67-47, on Kemp's lay-up at the 3:22 mark.
UNCP embarked on a 13-2 run midway through the first half to stake claim to a 20-9 advantage with just under seven minutes left to play before the break. Fayetteville State, however, would use a trio of UNCP turnovers, as well as cold shooting by the visitors to tie the game at 22 apiece just more than three minutes later. A pair of free throws by Stanton, as well as a buzzer-beating steal and score by DeDe Cotten, would give UNCP a 28-24 lead heading into intermission.
UNCP will close out a three-game road trip on Wednesday when the Lady Braves travel to Charleston, S.C., to battle NCAA Division I foe College of Charleston (2-3) at Carolina First Arena. Tip off is set for 7 p.m.
