Box Score PEMBROKE – Despite committing a season-high 28 turnovers, six double-figure scorers led the way for UNCP to take an 88-79 nonconference victory over the visiting Apprentice School Builders on Sunday afternoon at the English E. Jones Center in Pembroke.
The Braves (5-1, 1-0 PBC) used a strong 42-22 rebounding advantage as the key to their victory despite the high number of turnovers and a 50.8% shooting effort from the Builders (3-2). The Braves finished with a 53.6% shooting effort on the afternoon on 30 of 56 from the field, while shooting 7 of 12 (58.3%) from long range.
"I was really impressed with the Apprentice School," said UNCP head coach Ben Miller. "They're a much improved ballclub from last year and Coach (Franklin) Chatman's doing an excellent job of getting his guys to buy-in to his program. We feel really good about this win. They're a good basketball team."
Sophomore K.J. Cooper led the scoring effort for UNCP with 18 points on 6 of 9 shooting, including a perfect 3 of 3 from 3-point range. Cooper added six rebounds and eight assists in 34 minutes on the court.
Junior Nate Priest notched 15 points on 4 of 5 shooting from the floor while finishing a perfect 7 of 7 from the free throw line. Priest recorded six rebounds and two steals on the afternoon, and has notched at least five rebounds in every game this season.
Sophomores George Blakeney and Shahmel Brackett along with junior Cody Hughes each finished with 11 points for the Braves, with Blakeney and Hughes each recording five rebounds and Brackett finishing with four boards. Junior Mike Robinson rounded the Braves in double figures with 10 points while adding a team-high seven rebounds in the victory.
Isaih Harrison led the Builders' offensive efforts with a game-high 23 points on 9 of 15 shooting from the floor, while teammate Tevin Andrews knocked in 16 of his own in the loss.
UNCP will head back out on the road on Tuesday when they face the Wingate Bulldogs at 7:00 p.m. at Cuddy Arena in Wingate.
