ROCK HILL, S.C. – The UNCP Braves basketball squad faced their second 2009-2010 NCAA Division I Tournament participant in as many days Saturday, and fell to the Winthrop Eagles in exhibition play by a 68-52 final at the Winthrop Coliseum in Rock Hill, S.C.
The Braves offense was led by newcomer Cody Hughes, who used 5-9 shooting from the floor, including 3-5 from down town in notching a team-high 14 points. Sophomore George Blakeney added 11 points on 4-9 shooting from the field while fellow sophomore Shahmel Brackett chipped in 10 points of his own while adding four rebounds and two assists.
As a squad the Braves shot 34.6% from the field (18-52) while the Eagles countered with 47.8% shooting (22-46) in capturing the exhibition victory. Neither team was able to get the outside shooting going during the game with UNCP finishing just 4-19 (21.1%) from three-point land while Winthrop mustered just a 21.4% clip (3-14).
The Braves will return home for their final exhibition game on Nov. 11 when they host Athletes in Action at 7:30 p.m. in Pembroke. Admission to the game is free.
