Box Score PEMBROKE – Home-standing UNCP fought off
19 shots from visiting Wingate, including 12 in the first half
alone, to put together a flurry of overtime scoring opportunities
of their own , but was forced to settle with a 0-0 tie after 110
minutes of play Wednesday evening at Varsity Grounds.
Play between Wingate (2-1-1) and UNCP (3-1-1) became more
aggressive as time progressed with the Bulldogs ending the game
with 18 fouls and the Lady Braves with 15. Junior forward Rebecca Womack led the hosts in shots with three while Holly Holsclaw and
Julie Zielinski each contributed three shots for Wingate.
"Wingate is a quality team and they really battered us in
the first half," said UNCP head coach Lars Andersson.
"We made some changes at half to make the game competitive on
our end."
Four yellow cards and one red card to Andersson occurred within
five quick minutes of action for UNCP midway through the first
half. Despite the loss of Andersson for the final 39 minutes of
action, assistant coach Pauline Privitera led the Lady Braves to a
monster effort down the stretch.
"I'm very proud of my players for the continued
intensity and determination on the field and coach Privitera for
stepping in and securing the draw against a talented team,"
Andersson said.
Freshman goalkeeper Britney Bennett had four saves on the night
for UNCP. Carly Rives of Wingate grabbed six saves - three of which
came in the second overtime period. This is the first tie of the
season, as well as the series, for both teams.
UNCP will travel to Flagler (2-2-0, 1-0-0 PBC) on Saturday for
their second Peach Belt Conference matchup in a week. Kickoff has
been slated for 5 p.m. The Lady Braves will return home again on
Wednesday to battle Pfeiffer in a 7 p.m. match-up at Varsity
Grounds. Admission to all 2010 UNCP soccer home games is free.
