Braves Fall In PBC Opener With Flagler

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Newcomer Brett Luccia helped UNCP snap a scoreless streak of better than 200 minutes with a penalty kick Equalizer in the 43rd minute, but Flagler used a pair of second half goals to turn back the visiting Braves with a 3-1 victory on Saturday evening at Flagler Field.

The setback marked stretched the winless streak for UNCP (1-4-1, 0-1-0 PBC) out to three games, while evening up the league record for Flagler (4-1-0, 1-1-0). The Saints rattled off a season-high 25 shots, including 11 on target, in the key PBC win. Freshman goalkeeper Ryan Hanson registered a season-best eight saves for the Braves who fell to 0-2-0 all-time in their series with the Saints.

"It was a good performance and an oustanding effort, but unfortunately they had a little bit more than us," said UNCP head coach Phil Hindson. "I am disappointed with the result, but the guys performed extremely well and I am proud of them."

Martin Tomter added to his team-leading shot total with a team-best five strikes for the Black and Gold, who also got multi-shot exhibitions three other players as well. Three different players scored goals for Flagler, with Will Frandsen and Zach Shanahan tallying assists as well. Matt Gilman recorded five saves between the pipes for the hosts, while also yielding the lone UNCP goal as well.

Flagler put together a flurry of offensive action in the first seven minutes of the outing, but UNCP countered with an offensive explosion of its own in the following 14 minutes of action. A scoreless game through the first 25 minutes of the match-up, Arnel Selman delivered a perfect service into the penalty area in the 27th minute to which Frandsen redirected past a diving Hanson.

Despite a series of effective counterattacks by the visitors, the Braves would find themselves wanting over the next 18 minutes, but a hard foul inside the penalty area would yield a penalty kick attempt to which Luccia delivered for a 1-1 tie heading into the break.

Flagler would bust loose in the second half, however, getting a 55th minute goal from Mack Hough to go ahead for good, and then adding an insurance goal in the 72nd minute off the foot of Shanahan. UNCP would attempt a late rally to try and pull even, but a close-range header shot by Alex Antonescu would be the only scoring opportunity the visitors would deliver down the stretch.

The Braves will be back in action again on Wednesday when the Black and Gold makes the short trip to Laurinburg to lock horns with region rival St. Andrews (0-6-0). Game time has been set for 4 p.m. at Knights Field.
