Lady Braves Post First PBC Win Over Flagler, 2-0

Box Score

ST. AUGUSTINE, FLA. - Sophomore Brittany Padilla and freshman Anna Zetterlund each netted the first goals of their collegiate career, while fellow rookie goalkeeper Britney Bennett tallied a season-best six saves to register her second-straight shutout, to help UNCP to a 2-0 victory over Flagler on Saturday afternoon at Flagler Field.

The win snapped a two-game winless streak for the Lady Braves (4-1-1, 1-1-0 PBC) who have allowed just three goals through six outings this season. The Saints (2-3-1, 1-1-0) fell victim to a shutout for the second-straight game after battling region rival Lynn to a scoreless tie on Wednesday. It was the first Peach Belt Conference loss for the Lady Braves who fell 1-0 to then-No. 8 Columbus State in their PBC opener earlier this season.

A corner kick from Anna Svensson led Padilla to take a 21st minute shot which found the hip of a Saints defender, but the rebound found the feet of Padilla again and the sophomore's second shot in as many seconds went soaring into the back of the net. With less than three minutes left in regulation, Jenessa Mikolowski found a wide-open Zetterlund in space and the freshman finished with a chip shot on goal over Flagler goalkeeper Christina Coca.

"I am extremely proud of the girls for bouncing back after Wednesday's extremely physical match with Wingate," said UNCP head coach Lars Andersson. "We came into today's game without a few of our starters, and our entire squad stepped up and got the result. Winning on the road in this league is extremely difficult, but we were able to dig in and get the job done today."

Sheena Mature, Svensson, and Padilla each contributed three strikes onto UNCP's 16 total shots in the game. Flagler's Loren Cate led the Saints with five shots, including four that were on target. Coca allowed both goals in a full 90 minutes of action, but grabbed four saves on the day as well.

UNCP will return home on Wednesday for a non-conference matchup with the Pfeiffer Falcons (3-3-0). Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and admission is free.
