Box Score PEMBROKE – Sophomore Anna
Svensson and junior Rebecca
Womack each scored first half goals for UNCP, and the Lady
Braves held their opponent scoreless for the third-straight outing,
to key a 2-0 victory over visiting Pfeiffer on Wednesday evening at
Varsity Grounds. The shutout marked the fourth of the season for
the Lady Braves who have yielded just three goals through seven
contests.
The Lady Braves (5-1-1) took control of the match early when Faye
Corbett assisted Svensson for a one-on-one situation in the box
to bring the Lady Braves ahead of the Falcons (3-4-0) just 13
minutes into the game. The second goal came off a stolen pass by
Womack who dribbled the ball a short distance before cashing in on
the hosts' second and final score of the outing. UNCP outshot
Pfeiffer 25-10 with Corbett posting a game-high five shots.
Svensson and Sheena
Mature added four shots apiece.
"Apart from not finishing many of our goal opportunities, we
played very well tonight," said head coach Lars Andersson. "We have
always been a team that possesses the ball, we build over the
flanks, we get numbers in the box, and did very well with our
passing to pressure the defense. Defensively, we played with heart
and confidence on the field tonight."
Pfeiffer goalkeeper Jamie Alcala allowed both goals but had
seven saves on the night. UNCP's goalkeepers, Britney
Bennett and Rea
Segoviano, split time in goal and combined for five saves after
the defense stopped any real scoring threat on the night.
The Lady Braves will host Peach Belt Conference competitor
Montevallo (2-4-0, 0-2-0 PBC) on Saturday at 5 p.m. during Parents
Weekend at Varsity Grounds. Admission to all 2010 UNCP soccer home
games is free.
