Box Score PEMBROKE – Senior midfielder Faye Corbett
delivered the game-winning goal in the 21st minute to key a 1-0 win
for UNCP over Montevallo on Saturday afternoon at Varsity Grounds.
An assist from Rebecca
Womack allowed Corbett to shoot from within 10 feet to help
extend the Lady Braves' unbeaten streak out to four games.
Saturday's shutout marked the fourth-straight blanking for UNCP
(6-1-1, 2-1-0 PBC) who has allowed only three goals through the
first eight games of the current campaign. Freshman goalkeeper Britney
Bennett contributed to the shutout with three saves over a
complete game between the pipes for the Lady Braves, marking the
third clean sheet of the season for the Seminole, Fla., native.
"I have seen these girls play better soccer than they did
tonight. I am pleased we have another conference win but we must
evaluate our play before we face another opponent," said UNCP head
coach Lars Andersson. "Montevallo fought and battled for 90 minutes
and made it difficult for us to take the win with only one
goal."
Montevallo (2-6-0, 0-3-0 PBC) was held scoreless despite the
effort of Asgerdur Palsdottir who contributed five of the visitors'
10 shots on the night. Falcons' goalkeeper Kaitlin Thomas also
supplied three saves but allowed Corbett to score. UNCP outshot the
Falcons 16-10 with Sheena
Mature, Corbett, and Brittany
Padilla each contributing three shots apiece for the Lady
Braves.
UNCP will travel to Carson-Newman (3-4-0) on Tuesday for a
non-conference matchup with kick off scheduled for 4 p.m. The Lady
Braves will return home again on Saturday to battle Peach Belt
Conference foe Clayton State (3-3-0, 1-1-0 PBC) at 1 p.m. at
Varsity Grounds. Admission to all 2010 UNCP soccer home games is
free.
