Box Score JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Visiting UNCP
used a relentless offense to extend its unbeaten streak out to five
games by edging out Carson-Newman for a 2-1 victory on Tuesday
afternoon. The Lady Braves scored both of its goals within a span
of less than two minutes early in the first half.
Junior Rebecca
Womack delivered the first goal of the game for the Lady Braves
(7-1-1) just 12 minutes into the first half. Womack took advantage
of a misplayed ball with a clear header into the net. Sophomore Anna
Svensson, with the assist from Faye Corbett,
took her turn at goal by placing the ball in the upper right corner
from 10 feet away to bring the Lady Braves to a 2-0 lead.
Answering back in the first half was Carson-Newman's (3-5-0)
Trenna Howell to give the Eagles their only goal of the game.
Howell received the assist from Andrea Saevik and placed the ball
in the lower left corner just past the outstretched fingers of
goalkeeper Britney
Bennett. The score by the Eagles in the 38th minute snapped
Bennett's consecutive scoreless minutes streak at better than
327.
"We started off strong in the first 30 minutes of action, but
once Carson-Newman scored, the momentum shifted," said UNCP head
coach Lars Andersson. "After halftime our heads were back in the
game and we were able to play composed despite the continuous
back-and-forth action for the rest of the game."
Bennett recorded five saves in 90 minutes of action for UNCP,
while Carson-Newman goalkeeper Sarah Tompkins registered one stop
over a complete game performance. The Lady Braves outshot the
Eagles 13-8 with both teams collecting 11 fouls apiece.
UNCP will return home to face the Lakers of Clayton State
(3-3-0, 1-1-0 PBC) in Peach Belt Conference action at Varsity
Grounds on Saturday at 1 p.m. Admission to all 2010 UNCP soccer
home games is free.
