PEMBROKE – The UNCP Lady Braves
volleyball squad made quick work of visiting Winston-Salem State on
Tuesday, using just over an hour in earning a 3-0 victory to earn
their 10th win of the season.
"I thought we served them out of system, and that's
what our idea was going into this match. They had two kids that
were pretty legitimate hitters, but if you can take them out of
system, you can limit their swings. We did a good job with
that," said head coach Jeff Billington.
UNCP's effort at the service line was the major story of the
night, as the Lady Braves (10-4, 2-2 PBC) recorded 16 aces en route
to the straight-set victory. The Lady Braves also held a
consistent 62-63% sideout percentage throughout the match and were
able to stop any Lady Ram rallies.
Junior Rebecca Morgan led the squad with a
match-high 11 kills on 17 attempts (.471) while also contributing
three assisted blocks, three digs, and four of the afore mentioned
16 aces.
Freshman Jennifer Grunden finished her night with
four aces and sophomore Morgan Ridge finished her
night with nine assists and three aces. Heather Bolwerk led the squad with 15 assists while contributing
two kills, six digs and two aces of her own.
UNCP will head back out on the road this weekend to face perennial
powers Flagler and Armstrong Atlantic.
"Flagler should be pretty tough. We're going to
have to play a very consistent, focused match against them at their
place. They're definitely beatable …I
don't know what to expect from Armstrong. We watched
film on them yesterday and they seem to be a different team than
they were the last couple years. "
Flagler is currently 9-5 overall and is second in the PBC
standings with a 3-1 conference mark. Armstrong Atlantic is
currently 7-7 overall and have accumulated a 1-3 record in the
league.
UNCP faces off against Flagler in St. Augustine, Fla., on Friday
and then head to Savannah, Ga., for their matchup with the Pirates
on Saturday.
