PEMBROKE – UNCP will look for its first
win of the Phil Hindson era on Sunday evening when the Braves host
region rival Lenoir-Rhyne in the back half of a women's and
men's soccer doubleheader. Kickoff for the men's game
is set for 7:30 p.m. at Varsity Grounds. The women will open up the
twinbill at 5 p.m. Admission is free.
UNCP (0-1-0) heads into the contest fresh off a 1-0 setback to
Wingate on Thursday in which the Braves put together several
quality chances, but were unable to find the back of the net.
Wingate's Jamie McKenna converted a 65th minute header to
break the scoreless deadlock, and the Bulldogs fought off a pair of
late quality chances by the Braves to steal the road victory.
Despite the loss, UNCP got a quality outing from freshman
goalkeeper Ryan Hanson who recorded a pair of phenomenal first half
saves in the loss. The Cary native allowed just the lone goal, but
tallied six saves. Rookies Braxton Perkins and Martin Tomter each
recorded a team-best two shots to pace the offense.
The Bears, who will open their 2010 campaign in Pembroke on Sunday,
return Dave Bailey, a Bath, England, native, to lead their offense.
Bailey led L-R with 15 goals and six assists last season in an
8-6-4 season for the Bears. L-R also return five other starters,
including goalkeeper Tom Heath who tallied a 4-3-1 record and a
1.67 goals against average between the pipes last season. Heath
shared starting duties with Francisco Banuelos who now serves the
team as a goalkeeper coach.
Following Sunday evening's matchup, the Braves will continue
a season-opening 5-game home stand on Wednesday when they welcome
Barton to Varsity Grounds for another 7:30 p.m. tilt.
