Box Score PEMBROKE - UNCP racked up three goals in a
15-minute span in the first half to dig Lenoir-Rhyne a hole it was
unable to recover from. The Lady Braves answered a second half goal
by the visitors by scoring an additional goal to complete the
onslaught. The victory marked the fifth-straight for the Braves in
their series with L-R.
Anna
Svensson netted her first career hat trick while Faye Corbett
contributed a goal of her own to provide all the scoring for the
Lady Braves (2-0-0). Rookie Kayla Colon
registered a pair of assists, while Fanny
Forsman, Andrea
Collen and Karmi
Dagnachew each grabbed one assist for the Black and Gold. Laura
Linehan scored the lone goal for the Bears (1-1-0).
Lenoir-Rhyne tallied the first five shots of the contest, but
UNCP scored on each of the next three opportunities. Corbett
– courtesy of a Colon assist - gave the Lady Braves a lead
they would not relinquish with a goal at the 20:26 mark, and
Svensson added the first of her three scores 11 minutes later when
she took a brilliant service from Forsman and redirected past
Lenoir-Rhyne goalkeeper Rebecca Ingram.
Svensson struck again just less than three minutes later off
assists from Collen and Dagnachew to give the hosts a 3-0 advantage
heading into halftime.
Lenoir-Rhyne returned to the field ready to capture the win from
UNCP with a goal from Linehan who shot the ball over the end line
after bouncing off the defense. UNCP answered back and secured the
win with an assist from Colon to Svensson for a shot from the left
side.
"I was very proud of my athletes tonight because we were outshot
7-4 (in the first half) but were on target 75 percent of the time
and that is the kind of soccer I like to watch," said head coach
Lars Andersson. "We recovered from Thursday's game and had our
minds set on a win for tonight. We wanted it, we were determined to
get it, played outstanding and can walk away now with another win
added to our record."
The Bears outshot the Lady Braves, 12-10, however UNCP ended the
game with six saves against Lenior-Rhyne's two. UNCP
goalkeeper Britney
Bennett had two saves in her 90 minutes of play, while the
defense provided support with four team saves. Ingram turned in two
saves in a complete game in goal for the visitors.
Svensson registered a team-best four shots, while Corbett and
freshman Anna
Zetterlund provided multiple strikes as well. Linehan and
Catherine Hauck each contributed four shots to pace
Lenoir-Rhyne.
The Lady Braves hope to continue their momentum when they return
to action on Wednesday against the Barton Bulldogs (0-1-0). Kickoff
is set for 4:30 p.m. at Varsity Grounds and admission is free.
