Box Score PEMBROKE - Anna Svensson scored her sixth and
seventh goal of the season to lead UNCP to their fifth-straight win
against Barton, 2-0. UNCP's defense stopped the Bulldogs from
scoring on any of their four shots to post the shutout win.
Sam Dunn found Svensson in open space in the 29th minute and the
Sweden native's initial strike found the post, but Svensson
collected the rebound and fired a shot past Barton goalkeeper
Mileika Miki for the 1-0 lead. The preseason all-Peach Belt
Conference selection would strike again in the second half when
Rebecca Womack and Faye Corbett strung together a pair of passes
and found Svensson who redirected with a score in the 60th minute
to send the Bulldogs (0-2-0) away winless.
"We played poorly and the effort and concentration was
poor in the first half, but we stepped it up in the second half and
got the second goal and put the game away, ' said head coach
Lars Andersson. "Anna had 13 goals last season and she is a
pure box finisher. If you get her the ball in, on, or around the 18
(-yard line) she is efficient and will score. If she keeps this
pace up like she has in the last three games, I see potential for
her to be an all-American."
The Lady Braves outshot the Bulldogs 24-4 but were limited to
just two goals. Tara Larson and Miki each collected three saves and
allowed one goal during split time in goal. Rea Segoviano kept the
Bulldogs from scoring by grabbing three saves and posting the
individual shutout.
The Lady Braves take on No. 8 Columbus State (2-0-0) in their
first Peach Belt Conference game of the season on Friday. Kickoff
is set for 7 p.m. at Varsity Grounds and admission is free.
