Box Score PEMBROKE – Using a 25-4 run in the first half, the UNCP women's basketball team was able to pull past and hold the lead for the entirety of the game against Francis Marion, 85-74, on Sunday in Pembroke at the English E. Jones Center.
With the victory, the Lady Braves (5-6, 1-2 PBC) snapped a six-game losing streak to the Patriots (7-3, 0-2 PBC) that dated all the way back to Feb. 7, 2007. Senior JaToya Kemp registered her third double-double of the season, scoring a team-high 31 points and grabbing a team-best 12 rebounds. Kemp was 11-of-13 in field goal shooting and 9-of-12 from the charity stripe.
Francis Marion took the first lead of the game with a jumper by Simone Trice, but lost the lead with a layup by Kemp at the 17:13 mark. Francis Marion took the lead again at the 12:01 mark and increased the lead to eight points, but UNCP's run began allowing the Black and Gold to hold a 13-point lead at the half.
Besides Kemp, Illya Hunt, Domonique Washington and Kristen Hobbs posted double-digit scoring with 16, 12 and 11 points, respectively. Hunt registered a new career-high point total while Washington led the Black and Gold with six assists and Hobbs grabbed five steals. UNCP shot 53.1 percent compared to the Patriot's 41.9 percent from the field, and out-rebounded Francis Marion 49-28, but committed 28 turnovers - eight less than the Patriots.
Shannon Singleton-Bates set a new personal career-high with a game-high 32 points as she shot 10-of-19 from the field, 4-of-10 from the 3-point line, and 8-of-9 from the free-throw line. Courtney Mealing scored 15 points, while Trice collected 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Robin Colbert tallied 10 points and matched a team-high with eight rebounds.
UNCP scored 32 points in the paint and 29 points off turnovers while the Patriots had 26 points in the paints and 22 off turnovers.
UNCP will travel to Aiken, S.C. to face Peach Belt Conference opponent and 25th-ranked USC Aiken (11-2, 3-0 PBC) on Wednesday in the Convocation Center. Tip off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
