Box Score PEMBROKE – UNCP ended a four-game losing streak as the Lady Braves leapt over Augusta State using better than 42 percent field goal shooting and a 21-rebound advantage in the 66-58 conference victory on Thursday evening at the English E. Jones Center.
Senior JaToya Kemp registered a double-double for UNCP (6-10, 2-6 PBC) with 15 points and 10 rebounds as she was 70 percent from the charity stripe. Two other Lady Braves gathered double digits with Briana Stanton collecting a team-high 16 points and Domonique Washington tallying 12 with each grabbing seven rebounds as well. Washington shot 50 percent from the field and shared a team-best three assists with senior Illya Hunt.
Augusta State (6-9, 0-7) took the first lead of the game, but the Lady Braves proceeded to regain control of the game with the lead changing three times in the first half. UNCP gathered nearly half (30-of-68) of its point total from inside the paint while using turnovers to score an additional 20 points. The Lady Braves halted the Lady Jaguars from any fast break opportunities by posting collected 46-25 rebound disparity.
Blaire Egardo registered a game-high 24 points while Brooke McCants hit double-digits with 12 points. The Lady Jaguars struggled in field goal shooting knocking down only 34.5 percent of their shots.
The Lady Braves led at the half by nine points and increased their lead to 11 in the first minute of the second half.
"It is a great feeling to get a win and we, as a team, needed one," said UNCP head coach John Haskins. "The girls played strong on the floor and, as a result, we out-rebound the team."
The Lady Braves will continue action as the squad will travel to Savannah, Ga. to battle Armstrong Atlantic (7-8, 3-4) on Saturday. Tip off has been set for 1:30 p.m., with the UNCP men following the conclusion of the women's game.
