Box Score PEMBROKE – Georgia College's Dominique Huffin posted a last-minute 3-pointer with two seconds remaining to secure the victory for the Bobcats, 48-45, over UNCP on Sunday afternoon in the English E. Jones Center.
Neither the Lady Braves nor the Bobcats carried a distinctive lead during the game as the lead changed seven times. Georgia College regained the lead with 5:16 left, but JaToya Kemp tied the game with 16 seconds left to play by nailing two free throws. The Lady Braves scrambled back on defense, but were left disappointed as Huffin's wide-open shot from the left wing fell through the net.
Leading the Lady Braves (8-11, 4-7 PBC) with 15 points was
Talena Faison as she shot 3-of-7 from behind the perimeter and 6-of-14 from the field. The Black and Gold strained to stay competitive in rebounding with 33 total boards despite
DayDay Ray's team-best eight rebounds. The Bobcats (13-4, 5-4) took to the glass grabbing 49 rebounds - 22 of which were offensive - while registering 18 points off second chance shots.
Huffin tallied a game-high 19 points and 14 rebounds for the only double-double of the game. Chimere Jordan and Karisma Boykin collected 11 and 10 points, respectively. Georgia College was out-shot from the field with 27 percent shooting, but the Black and Gold shot a mere 33 percent.
"We defended well and stayed in the game, but Georgia College has some very talented players that make some key shots," said UNCP head coach
John Haskins. "We need to be more aggressive offensively and grab more offensive rebounds because that was our weakness in the game."
The Lady Braves continue action when they travel to face conference foe Francis Marion (13-5, 6-4) on Wednesday in the Smith University Center in Florence, S.C. Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m.
