PEMBROKE – Sophomore Megan Gallimore used an outstanding four blocks - one block solo and six block assists - to shut down the Catawba Indians who hit a .188 hitting percentage on Tuesday evening in the English E. Jones Center in Pembroke. The scores of the games were 18-25, 25-20, 25-23 and 25-23.
The Lady Braves (9-10) struggled with a 43 percent sideout percentage in game one but regrouped in game two with a 69 percent sideout percentage. Despite the Lady Indians (11-4) outhitting the Black and Gold, 53-44, the effort of the Lady Braves in the final two games pushed the team to victory by a mere two points in each game.
Senior Rebecca Morgan posted a double-double with a game-high 16 kills on 39 attacks along with 11 digs. Ashlyn Rebok dished out 37 of the team's total 41 assists and shared a team-best 14 digs with libero Marissa Baker. Chelsea Phillips registered a game-high three service aces and posted 12 digs.
Catawba's Emily Richardson led the team with 11 kills on 27 attacks, while Jordan Raye tallied 40 assists. The win snapped a three-game losing streak in the series with Catawba and has allowed UNCP to go unbeaten at home this season.
"This is a region win and Catawba came in with a good record which strengthens our region changes," said UNCP head coach Jeff Billington. "We showed resilience in the third set and we made a few changes and stuck to the plan. I am very proud and glad we got the victory."
UNCP will compete against Peach Belt Conference opponent Augusta State (9-11, 2-3 PBC) on the road in Augusta, Ga. in the Christenberry Fieldhouse on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
