Box Score PEMBROKE – Goals by Cassie DeQueiroz and Kayla Colon lifted the UNCP women's soccer squad to a 2-0 victory over USC Aiken in Peach Belt Conference action on Wednesday evening at Varsity Grounds in Pembroke.
"I think anytime you can win in the Peach Belt Conference you'll take it," said UNCP head coach Lars Andersson. "A good thing we can take away from this win was the fact that we created a lot of stuff in the final third. We were not very efficient and that's something we're going to have to clean up against the likes of Armstrong Atlantic, Lander, Georgia College, and so on."
"I thought it was a quality goal and Cassie showed the way with very simple finishing. She had an opportunity in front of the goal and instead of blasting the ball in the back of the net she lightly placed it in the corner. That's her second goal in the last two games so she's obviously doing very well right now."
DeQueiroz notched the first goal for the Lady Braves (8-2-1, 3-2-0 PBC) just 1:46 into the ballgame on a pass from junior Ashley Anctil when she knocked it in from the right side.
Colon then recorded her first goal of the season for some added insurance during the 57th minute after she dribbled around the Pacers' (3-6-0, 0-4-0 PBC) goalkeeper Alli Edens and knocked it inside the far post.
Sophomore Britney Bennett notched her 15th career shutout in the victory after notching six saves while the UNCP defense as a collective unit allowed just nine shots during the contest.
UNCP will now travel to Savannah, Ga., on Saturday to face PBC co-leader Armstrong Atlantic State in a pivotal conference matchup.
