Braves Run Win Streak To Three By Dismantling Morris

Box Score

PEMBROKE – UNCP scored 32 points off turnovers, registered a +20 advantage in the rebounding column and shot better than 52 percent in each half en route to a 95-54 victory over visiting Morris on Thursday evening in the English E. Jones Center.

UNCP (5-3) registered its first series win in three tries against the Hornets (1-8) and shot better than 50 percent from the field for the third-straight outing. The Braves are +37.7 in the scoring column amid their current winning skein and have out-rebounded their opponents by better than 19 boards over that same time span as well.

K.J. Cooper scored 18 of his game-high 20 points in the opening half and led four Braves with double-figure scoring nights. Mike Robinson and George Blakeney each totaled 14 points, while freshman Ben Jacobs booked a dozen to go along with a team-best eight rebounds.

Adrian Coard came off the bench to score a team-best 14 points for Morris, while leading scorer Andreaus Canty tallied 11 points – six below his season average.

"It is encouraging for us to have back-to-back games with only 10 turnovers," said UNCP head coach Ben Miller. "Our guys work hard at shooting the ball in practice, and I think we have good balance with our scoring, both inside and out. We also have a lot of unselfishness. We had a lot of field goals off of assists (20) tonight and that is a sign of a good team."

UNCP stretched a 23-point halftime lead out to 67-36 with 14:53 left to play, and then used an 11-3 run midway through the period to pad its advantage out to 82-41 on two free throws by Jacobs. Cooper gave the Braves their largest lead of the game, 92-47, on an easy lay-in with just less than three minutes left.

A back-and-forth battle through the first five minutes of the night, the Black & Gold ran its lead to double digits on newcomer Griffin Pittman's 3-pointer with 13:08 left before the intermission. Morris whittled its deficit all the way back to five points, 19-14, on John Nelson's bucket with 8:47 left, but the Braves scored the game's next 14 points and left little doubt the rest of the way out.

UNCP will close out a five-game home stand on Saturday when the Braves lift the lid on their 2011-12 Peach Belt Conference schedule against Lander (3-1, 1-0 PBC) in the English E. Jones Center. Tip off for the second half of the women's and men's doubleheader has been slated for 3:30 p.m. Admission prices are $5 for adults and $2 for children 18 years of age and younger. UNCP students are admitted free with a valid Braves Card.
