No. 30 Braves Complete Sweep Of Salem International

Box Score

PEMBROKE – UNCP booked a season-best 17 hits behind a two-hit shutout from its six-armed pitching staff en route to completing a weekend sweep of visiting Salem International with a 10-0 rout of the Tigers on Sunday afternoon at Sammy Cox Field.

Senior Joe Mangum doubled, homered and drove in five runs on a 2-for-4 outing to fuel the offensive fireworks for UNCP (7-0), who also got three hits apiece from Josh Haley (3-for-5, 2B, HR) and newcomers Eitan Maoz and Chase Grissom. Junior college transfer J.J. Williams was hit by pitch in his initial at-bat of the day, but finished off a perfect 2-for-2 hitting line with a fourth-inning triple and a fifth inning double.

Salem International (0-3) got lone singles from Charles Rymers and Jason Mickley – the eighth and ninth batters in their lineup.

Brad Isom struck out six and allowed two hits over six walk-less innings to pick up the win for the Black and Gold who stretched the remaining three innings of play across five pitchers. Braxton Lewis struck out the final two batters of the eighth inning, while preseason all-American closer Brian Willis fanned each of the three batters he faced in the ninth.

Myles Swartz (0-1) saddled the loss for the visitors after yielding 11 hits, two walks and six earned runs in a brief four-inning appearance. Nicholas Forsythe, Larry Plum and Kyle Koedyker did not allow a run in brief appearances for the visitors as well.

UNCP began the game with three extra-base hits, including a leadoff homer from Haley and a run-scoring double from freshman Stephen McKinney, to take a quick 2-0 lead and never look back. Williams tripled and scored in the fourth to stretch the lead out to 3-0, before Mangum's three-run dinger in the fifth made the score laughable.

Haley doubled in a run and later scored on a wild pitch to spark a four-run eighth inning that was capped on a two-run double by Mangum.

UNCP will hit the road again on Tuesday afternoon when it travels to Misenheimer to battle region foe Pfeiffer (3-3) at Joe Ferebee Field. First pitch has been set for 2 p.m.
