Box Score 2 PEMBROKE – The UNCP Lady Braves softball squad needed just seven hits to score five runs while UNCP starter Starr Gilley put the clamps down over five innings to capture a 5-0 victory over the visiting Barton Bulldogs in game two of Thursday's doubleheader at LRA Field in Pembroke.
The Lady Braves (7-5, 0-0 PBC) benefitted from four errors by the Bulldogs (3-7, 0-0 CC) in clinching the doubleheader split.
The Lady Braves broke open a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning with two runs coming off a first-to-home wild pitch plus a throwing error by the Bulldogs' catcher that scored pinch runner Taylor Cloninger. After Jamie Burwell reached on a single and advanced to second on the second Barton error of the inning, junior Ashley Harrell brought Burwell home with an RBI-single.
The Lady Braves would add three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning the old fashion way with senior Courtney Hill lacing an RBI-single into left field to score freshman Schanique Barrett from second base. Senior Loren Bartz then singled to move Hill to third and sophomore Holly Berry brought her around to score in the next at-bat with an RBI-single to left field. Burwell then singled to left center to score Bartz to round out the scoring for the Lady Braves.
Gilley captured her fourth win of the season after going five full innings with five strkeouts and allowing just four hits. Freshman Natalie Klemann closed out the final two innings and allowed just one hit while striking out one batter.
Burwell paced the offense with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate with a run scored and an RBI while Hill added a 1-for-3 showing with a run scored and an RBI.
The Lady Braves will open the PBC-portion of their schedule on Sunday when they travel to Americus, Ga. to battle Georgia Southwestern in a doubleheader.
