Box Score PEMBROKE – Led by six athletes in double figures, the UNCP men's basketball team downed visiting Flagler College by a 110-107 final in triple overtime on Saturday afternoon at the English E. Jones Center in Pembroke.
The Braves (14-7, 7-6 PBC) have now won three straight and have assured themselves of a winning season for the first time since the 1999-00 campaign. The loss was the seventh-straight for the Saints (9-10, 3-8 PBC) who have now dropped to 0-3 all-time against UNCP.
The game featured 16 lead changes and nine ties, with UNCP holding the only large statistical advantage in rebounding (49-39). The Braves shot 38-of-79 from the field during the game while the Saints finished 35-of-71, including 9-of-21 from downtown.
Sophomore K.J. Cooper notched a career-high 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the floor, including 5-of-7 from the free throw line. He added five assists and two steals in 44 minutes of action. Fellow sophomore Shahmel Brackett followed with 18 points on 5-of-16 shooting from the floor, including a perfect 7-of-7 mark from the foul line, most of which coming late in the second period and during the overtime periods.
Junior Cody Hughes captured his first double-double while dawning the Black and Gold with a 16-point 11-rebound performance and also added seven assists and two steals in 39 minutes of action. He was 5-of-11 from the floor and 2-of-5 from long range on the afternoon.
Junior Nathan Priest and sophomore George Blakeney added 15 and 13 points, respectively, with Priest adding nine boards to go with 7-of-12 shooting and Blakeney leading the squad with four blocks.
The Saints were led by senior John Pietkiewicz, who notched a game-high 39 points on 12-22 shooting, including 8-of-14 from downtown in 52 minutes on the floor. Fellow senior Kenny Moore added a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds in 51 minutes of action.|
UNCP will be back at it on Monday when they travel to Augusta, Ga., to battle with the third-ranked Augusta State.
