Lady Braves Upset By Augusta State, 51-44

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The UNCP women's basketball team was upset on the road as Augusta State used a 7-0 run in the final minute to push past the Lady Braves for a 51-44 victory on Monday evening at Christenberry Fieldhouse.

The Lady Braves (9-13, 5-9 PBC) trailed Augusta State (7-14, 1-12) for a majority of the game two tie scores and one lead change occurring in the first few minutes of the first half. With 1:36 second remaining in the game, Domonique Washington tied the score at 44-44, but Blaire Egardo drained a 3-pointer to start the run before nailing two foul shots to take the score to 49-44. Brooke McCants added two final free throws to put the game to rest with seven seconds left to play.

Senior JaToya Kemp was the leading scorer for the Lady Braves with 15 points and eight rebounds while Washington registered 10 points, eight rebounds and a team-best five assists. The Black and Gold struggled at the free throw line, hitting just 7-of-17 compared to Augusta State who was 14-of-16 from the charity stripe.

The Lady Braves were competitive on the boards, grabbing 36 boards, but were burdened with 19 turnovers. Augusta State gathered its first conference victory in two years by snapping a 41-game losing streak against PBC teams and a five-game losing streak in the series with the Lady Braves. Senior Jarquella Woods collected a career-high 15 points while Egardo registered 12 points. 

The Lady Braves will close out a two-game road trip on Saturday when the Black and Gold travel to Dahlonega, Ga., to battle conference foe North Georgia (13-9, 4-7) at Memorial Hall Basketball Gymnasium. Tip off has been slated for 1:30 p.m. with the UNCP men following the conclusion of the women's game.
