Box Score WILSON – UNCP blasted three home runs behind seven shutout innings from Brad Isom as the 15th-ranked Braves established a new program benchmark with their 38th victory of the season by blanking Barton on Sunday afternoon at Nixon Field.
The result helped UNCP (38-10) establish its best regular season mark (winning percentage) since the 1969 Braves registered a 32-7 clip. The win total also helped this year's version of the Black and Gold move past the 2009 edition atop the school's single-season wins list. The setback marked the fifth-straight series loss for Barton (16-28) who fell to 13-22 all-time against the Braves, including a 0-3 clip this season.
Brad Bridgeman (2-for-3), Josh Haley (1-for-3) and Eitan Maoz (2-for-4) each homered to highlight the offense for UNCP, who also got a multi-hit outing from senior Jason Coker (2-for-5). Alex Brann paced the Bulldogs with a 2-for-3 hitting line.
Isom (9-3) grabbed his ninth win of the season by scattering five hits and striking out four over seven innings of work, with Brantley Hattrich striking out four in two innings of relief for the visitors as well. Hunter Meekins (3-7) saddled the tough-luck loss for the Bulldogs despite striking out seven and allowing one earned run in a five-inning start.
UNCP scored its first run of the game on a costly passed ball in the third, doubled the lead on Maoz's solo shot in the fifth and then scored the final runs of the game in the seventh via a solo home run from Bridgeman, as well as a 2-run shot from Haley two batters later.
Isom was perfect through his first two innings of work before yielding a leadoff single in the third, but still faced the minimum through five innings anyway. Hattrich allowed a meaningless one-out single in the eighth, but finished off the relief outing by striking out the side in the ninth.
UNCP, which locked up the No. 3 seed in the Peach Belt Conference's Eastern Division with a pair of Lander losses on Sunday, will be in action again on Sunday when they travel to Columbus, Ga., for the PBC Tournament. A game time, as well as an opponent, has yet to be determined.
