Lady Braves Post 13-0 Clean Sheet In Season Opener

Box Score

WILSON – UNCP head women's soccer coach Lars Andersson could not have asked for a better start to the season Thursday after his squad poured in 13 goals en route to a 13-0 nonconference victory over Barton at Barton Soccer Complex in Wilson.

The Lady Braves have now started off each of the last eight seasons with a victory. They improve their all-time record against Barton to 8-3-1 while upping their winning streak in the series to six. The win also sets a new school record for margin of victory - surpassing the margin of 12 goals that was set in a 12-0 victory over North Carolina Wesleyan on September 16, 2003.

The squad also posted a 43-to-2 ratio on shots taken while taking 10 corner kicks to Barton's one.

"It's always great to get a win the first time out to start a new season," Anderson said. " I was very pleased with our efficiency in the final third. We had an opportunity to play every single player on our roster tonight and it was a total team effort and I named the entire roster the 'Player of the Game' afterwards. We're very excited about getting off to a good start but we have to move on from here and face a very high quality opponent in Pfeiffer on Saturday."

UNCP needed just over ten minutes to put two goals on the board after senior Rebecca Womack found the back of the net first at the 10:09 mark and then at the 10:30 mark of the game. Womack's first goal came on an assist from sophomore Kayla Colon at the right wing, and the second came from the opposite side and was unassisted.

The Lady Braves added to their lead at the 32:51 mark of the contest on a goal from the center of the box by Brittany Padilla who received the pass from junior Fanny Forsman. Just under two minutes passed on the clock before UNCP struck again, this time on a goal by freshman Amalia Arvidsson on a pass from Andrea Collen. Arvidsson added another goal at 41:32, this time on an assist by Padilla.

UNCP would head into halftime up 5-0 but were far from done offensively. Just under three minutes passed in the second half before UNCP added another goal, this time from Forsman on a shot from the far right wing. Collen would score her first goal of the year just under two minutes later when she smashed a Padilla pass in the box past the keeper to put UNCP up comfortably, 8-0.

Sophomore Frankie Berscak would add the first of her three goals next, with the first one coming from the left wing on a pass by freshman Jasmine Jordan. Berscak would score again at the 67:02 point of the game from inside the box on a pass by Elke Groothuis. Just 2:15 passed before Collen added her second goal of the night – this one unassisted from the right wing.

Berscak would then top off her hat trick on the night with  a shot from inside the box to move UNCP up 10-0. Elke Groothuis scored her first goal of the season next on a shot from the left wing after a pass from Alisia Gustafson made it into the box.

Padilla closed out the game's scoring with her second goal from the top of the box to give UNCP a commanding 13-0 victory to start the season.

Berscak led the squad with three goals on the night while Womack, Collen and Padilla added two apiece.

The Lady Braves will be back at it on Saturday when they travel to Meisenheimer for a battle with the Pfeiffer Falcons at 1 p.m.
