Box Score YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – After suffering the first loss of the season on Saturday, senior Michael Davis delivered the lone goal of the game in the 33rd minute to send the UNCP men's soccer team ahead of Young Harris in a 1-0 victory at Frances Wood Wilson Soccer Field in Young Harris, Ga., on Sunday.
The Braves (6-1-0) started the scoring opportunity on a free kick due to a yellow card committed by Young Harris (5-1-0). Sam Miles was on the receiving end of the pass and attempted a shot which hit the crossbar and rebounded back to Davis. Davis headed the ball into the back of the net to post his second goal of the season.
UNCP held off Young Harris' offense and ended the undefeated streak as well as capturing the first victory in the series between the two schools. The game was filled with seven yellow cards, three of which came in the first half. D.J. Henry, Daniel Bougt and Davis were the recipients of the three UNCP yellow cards as the Black and Gold tallied 28 fouls compared to 20 by Young Harris.
Miles led the offensive force for the Braves by totaling four shots while Alex Antonescu added three. Sophomore Ryan Hanson collected his first shutout of the season by holding onto seven saves in his 90 minutes of action between the goal posts.
Despite outshooting UNCP 14-9, Young Harris failed to finish each shot as Khurram Shazad held a team-high six shots. Goalkeeper Wezly Barnard recorded four saves for the Mountain Lions in his 90 minutes in goal. The teams entered halftime with three shots apiece but Young Harris was held to one shot in the second half as the Braves proved unyielding on defense.
"I couldn't be prouder of the guys in the game," said UNCP head coach Phil Hindson. "They played with heart and determination which showed in the end result and we are all satisfied with the victory."
UNCP will return back to Pembroke to host Peach Belt Conference rival Flagler (4-1-1, 2-0-1) on Friday at Varsity Grounds after the completion of the women's game, which starts at 5:30 p.m. Admission to all 2011 UNCP soccer home games is free.
