Lady Braves Shut Out Crusaders, 2-0

Box Score

BELMONT – The UNCP women's soccer team fired just two shots on goal, but both of them found the net to give the Lady Braves a 2-0 win over Belmont Abbey on Thursday evening in Belmont.

The Lady Braves (6-2-1, 1-2-0 PBC) got three big saves from sophomore goalkeeper Britney Bennett to spearhead the defense, while the offense was out-shot by the Crusaders (4-5-0) by a 10-to-8 margin. The 2-0 victory gave Bennett the 14th shutout of her career.

"We came out and did not play well in the first half and we were very fortunate because we were being out-worked, out-shot and out-hustled," said UNCP head coach Lars Andersson. "We were very fortunate to score a late goal to go into halftime with a 1-0 lead. However, I'm proud of the way we responded in the second half. We made some personnel changes and moved some players around and we found a lineup that I feel very excited about. We may have answered some important questions for the rest of the season."

The Lady Braves first got on the board in the 41st minute on a shot from six yards out into an empty net by freshman Michelle Hernandez after Belmont Abbey goalkeeper Hannah Kohls misplayed a corner kick.

Junior Ashley Anctil added an insurance goal in the 63rd minute on a shot from the left side of the box to the upper right corner for her second goal of the season.

The Lady Braves will return to action on Saturday when they host Peach Belt Conference rival Georgia Southwestern at Varsity Grounds. First kick is scheduled for 1 p.m.
