Braves Fall To Visiting Carson-Newman

Box Score

PEMBROKE – Carson-Newman racked up nearly 500 yards of total offense, including 351 on the ground, to snap a two-game series losing streak with a 31-10 victory over UNCP on Saturday afternoon at Grace P. Johnson Stadium.

The setback marked the second-straight loss for UNCP (5-3) who was held to its lowest rushing total (38 yards) in more than five years. The triumph marked the third-straight victory for Carson-Newman (5-2) who also captured its first win over the Braves since the 2010 season.

Luke Charles threw for 294 yards and a fourth quarter score on 23-of-37 passing, while senior Donald Britt caught two passes for 81 yards, including a 64-yard touchdown reception - his first of the season - in the game's final period. Darcus Elliott tallied a game-best 12 tackles for the Braves, including an assist on a tackle for loss.

Tyron Douglas rushed for 125 yards and a pair of scores for the Eagles, who also got 102 rushing yards (15 carries) from Brandon Baker. The ground output marked the fifth time this season that the Eagles have crossed the 300-rushing yard plateau. Brandon Haywood threw for 124 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 4-of-9 passing as well.

"Give credit to Carson-Newman, they came in and did what they had to do today," said UNCP head coach Pete Shinnick. "We need to come in on Monday and dedicate ourselves to improving on the mistakes that we have made the last couple of games. We need to continue to get better week after week."

A 22-yard field goal by Connor Haskins capped a 17-play, 79-yard scoring drive for the Braves six seconds into the second quarter, but Carson-Newman scored three times before the half, first on Haywood's 48-yard pass down the visitor sideline with 11:53 to play, and then on a 40-yard scamper by Douglas four minutes later. Douglas's 4-yard plunge with 40 seconds left before the break gave the Eagles a 21-3 advantage heading into the locker rooms.

After forcing the Braves to go 3-and-out on their opening possession of the second half, Carson-Newman padded their advantage out to 28-3 on Haywood's 60-yard pass to Brown. Curt Duncan's 25-yard field goal with 37 seconds left to play in the third quarter capped a 15-play, 88-yard scoring drive that pushed C-N's lead out to 31-3.

Britt's 64 yard touchdown reception just four minutes into the fourth quarter would cap the scoring for both teams. The Braves, twice, had their chances to get back into the game on a lengthy drive in the third quarter, but Powell had his 82-yard touchdown run down the near sideline negated on offsetting personal foul penalties, before Oliver Davis slammed the door on the 10-play, 62-yard drive by intercepting Charles at the 4-yard line.

UNCP will put the caps on its 2012 home schedule on Saturday when it suits up to host Newberry (5-3) in a 2 p.m. Homecoming contest at Grace P. Johnson Stadium.
