Box Score PEMBROKE – After 90 minutes of aggressive action on Saturday afternoon at Varsity Grounds, the UNCP men's soccer team registered a 2-0 shutout victory over Peach Belt Conference rival Young Harris as junior Martin Tomter added the game-winning and insurance goals for the win.
Coming out of the first half in a scoreless deadlock, Tomter received a pass from the top of the box in the 55th minute by senior Sean Hoek and junior Jeff MacDonald, and dribbled down the left side, past the defender and drilled the shot into the lower left corner to put UNCP (10-3-1, 5-3-0 PBC) ahead by one.
Tomter again found his way into Young Harris (12-3-1, 4-2-1 PBC) territory at the 81:09 mark. He used a fast break to fly past the defender and go one-on-one with the goalkeeper. He tallied his eighth goal of 2012 as the ball landed into the right corner of the net.
"Tactically the guys did an outstanding job. We had a very good game plan and stuck to it, but I think in the end we actually could have scored a couple more goals," said UNCP head coach Phil Hindson.
All seven yellow cards were awarded after the 65th minute as the game ended with 38 total fouls including 29 alone in the second half.
Junior Ryan Hanson collected four saves throughout the match as the UNCP defense halted all 13 shots by Young Harris. The Braves posted 16 shots as Tomter led the way with four, and Matt MacDougall, Sam Miles and Hoek each notched three.
Young Harris was led by Khurram Shazad with four shots, while Niall McCabe posted three. Goalkeeper Wezly Barnard grabbed two saves in his 90 minutes between the posts.
UNCP snapped Young Harris' six-game unbeatend streak and continued with its unbeaten streak to four games.
"It was a tremendous win for us because they are an outstanding team. We are very happy with the win but we have to move forward and get ready for our two difficult games this week," Hindson said.
The Braves will finish out the regular season with two road matches beginning with Pfeiffer (0-13-2) on Monday in Misenheimer.
