Box Score PEMBROKE – The UNCP women's soccer team outshot Peach Belt Conference newcomer Young Harris, 15-11, to earn a 2-1 decision over the Mountain Lions Saturday afternoon at Varsity Grounds.
UNCP's (8-5-2, 4-4-1 PBC) leading scorers, Amalia Arvidsson and Rae-Shawna Campbell, netted one goal each for the Lady Braves, bringing their season total to nine goals apiece. Campbell took a team -best six shots; including two on goal, while Arvidsson delivered four shots with two on goal. Mika Lopes scored the only goal for Young Harris (6-8-0, 2-7-0) on a second half penalty kick. Lopes led the Mountain Lions, taking four shots with three on goal.
"Young Harris is a well-coached team, they're record meant nothing; they came in with only two PBC wins but gave us all we could handle in the first half. We did not play very well the first 45, we didn't get the ball out in the wide areas and we were very one dimensional," said UNCP head coach Lars Andersson. "In the second half we settled down and played the ball much better. It got a little bit exciting in the end, but we really manned the pumps the last five minutes and I thought the girls did a fantastic job finishing out the game. It was a total team effort and we come away with three PBC points," Andersson said.
Campbell notched the game-winning goal on an assist from Arvidsson in the 71st minute of action. Lopes earned her fifth goal of the 2012 campaign for Young Harris, on a penalty kick in the 85th minute.
In the 35th minute of play, Arvidsson posted the only goal of the first half on an assist from Brittany Padilla. Arvidsson's shot hit the crossbar and bounced past the keeper, putting the Lady Braves up 1-nill.
Britney Bennett played a complete 90:00 between posts for UNCP, collecting seven saves. Bennett has picked up 67 saves this season for the Black and Gold.
The Lady Braves will be back in action on Monday as the squad travels to Hickory for a regional contest with nationally ranked No. 19 Lenoir-Rhyne (12-1-0) on Monday at 4 p.m.
