Box Score AIKEN, S.C. – Despite outshooting USC Aiken throughout the match, the UNCP men's soccer team suffered a tough loss on Wednesday evening as the Pacers knocked in the only shot of the game in the 72nd minute to claim the 1-0 Peach Belt Conference victory.
USC Aiken (5-5-4, 2-5-1 PBC) collected the game-winning score off a flick near the goal by Mark Hanlon to set up Mohamed Fall for the shot which registered his third goal of the season. The loss snapped UNCP's (11-4-1, 5-4-0) five-game unbeaten streak this season and four-game unbeaten streak in the series between the two schools.
The Braves put pressure on the Pacers from the start of the game and hammered 14 shots in Pacer territory. UNCP totaled three shots in the first 12:47 before the Pacers could notch their first shot in the 17th minute. UNCP led by three shots in the first half 9-6, but both teams posted five shots apiece in the second half.
Juniors Martin Tomter and Daniel Bougt led the assault with three shots each, while senior Sean Hoek and freshman Rico Laitinen tallied two apiece. Four athletes from USC Aiken posted two shots each during the match.
The physical game brought about 18 fouls for each team including four yellow cards for the Black and Gold, and two yellow cards along with a red card for the Pacers.
Junior Ryan Hanson spent all 90 minutes between the net and in spite of the goal, he managed two saves. Brandon Jarosz collected four saves for the Pacers while the team registered one.
The Braves will await the announcement of the place and opponent for UNCP's match on Tuesday in the first round of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament. The first round will be held at the host site of the higher seed.
